In this multi-purpose hall, the acoustic operable partitions play a central role in the day-to-day use of the space. They allow a large open room to be quickly transformed into multiple separate areas based on the activities taking place, occupancy requirements, and operational needs. Originally installed in 1997, the system had reached an advanced state of wear after nearly 28 years of service without significant maintenance.

Over time, several components had lost their effectiveness. The panels were damaged, the floor seals were no longer functioning properly, and certain mechanisms showed signs of fatigue caused by repeated use. Several panels had also become misaligned, making them more difficult to close and reducing the smoothness of operation. In a facility where spaces are regularly reconfigured, this type of deterioration inevitably affects both acoustic performance and the overall user experience.

Before

The objective of the project was not to alter the existing space layout, but rather to restore the performance of a configuration that was already well suited to the buildingʼs needs. Despite the scope of the work, which included the complete replacement of the partition panels, the project was carried out while keeping the remainder of the facility accessible and operational for occupants.

The installation presented a significant logistical challenge. The new panels, measuring 13′-6″ in height, were destined for a second-floor hall, making transportation through conventional access routes impossible. To facilitate installation, a large window in the rear stairwell was temporarily removed, allowing a crane to bring the new panels into the building and remove the old ones. A temporary wooden platform was also constructed within the stairwell to enable the panels to be moved safely on rolling carts between the exterior opening and the second-floor level.

The existing panels were first removed to completely clear the system. The track system was then cleaned, inspected, and lubricated in preparation for the installation of the new partitions. As the new panels were brought into the building, they were suspended from the existing track system and positioned within their respective storage pockets. Once all panels had been installed, the system underwent final adjustments to ensure precise alignment, smooth operation, and optimal performance.

The system consists of three acoustic operable partitions that allow the hall to be configured into one, two, or three separate spaces. A Series 5600 partition closes the opening between the main hall and the cafeteria, while a Series 5500 partition divides the main hall into two sections. A third Series 5600 partition can then be deployed to create a three-room configuration, consisting of a main hall with a stage and two smaller spaces adjacent to the cafeteria. When the partitions are closed, each room maintains independent access through the buildingʼs existing double-door entrances.

The panel replacement also provided an opportunity to refresh the appearance of the space. The original cream-colored finish was replaced with a deeper blue-gray tone, adding greater visual depth and presence when the partitions are deployed. While preserving the character of the facility, the project ultimately restored a safer, more reliable system that is easier to operate and delivers improved acoustic performance on a daily basis.
